Hockey World Cup 2018: India draw 2-2 against Belgium; Canada, South Africa draw 1-1
A last-gasp equaliser by Simon Gougnard of Belgium denied India victory in their World Cup game as India's Pool C clash vs Belgium ended in a 2-2 draw in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.
In the first half, much of the proceedings was dominated by Belgium . After missing out twice early in the game, drag-flick specialist Alexander Hendrickx converted in the eighth minute to give Belgium an early lead.
India made a valiant comeback after the change of ends in second half, scoring two goals in the third and fourth quarter through Harmanpreet Singh and Simranjeet Singh to take the lead.
But the hosts defence faltered in the final minutes and conceded a late goal when Simon Gougnard scored in the 56th minute to draw level.
The draw, however, enabled world No. 5 India to take the top spot in Pool C ahead of Belgium on goal difference. Both teams have a win and a draw from two outings.
Canada, South Africa share points after a 1-1 draw
Canada and South Africa played out a 1-1 draw in their second Pool C match at the Kalinga hockey stadium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.
Canadian goalkeeper David Carter produced a string of saves to frustrate the South Africans before Ntuli scored in the match's penultimate phase.
From the left, he received a pass from Richard Pautz, spun to evade a rushing Carter and slotted the ball into an unguarded Canadian net to put South Africa ahead.
